The pianist Agustí Fernández, the bassist Barry Guy and the drummer Ramón López have collaborated on numerous occasions, most recently on Morning Glory (ECM Records), a poetic recording with six decidedly melodic composed pieces by Fernández and six almost minimalist group improvisations. Low key without being ballads, the composed works have the unforced grace of extemporizations, the improvisations the measured balance of written scores. The combo serves as a bridge between the key trios of the past (Jarrett, Evans, Hancock) and today’s musical quests. Their sound is mysterious without being hermetic, lyrical without being facile, meditative without being dark. This is slow, peaceful, dreamy music.
Ramón López will also be leading an improvisation workshop, as well as presenting a children’s performance entitled Mama Afrika on February 10 in collaboration with the cartoonist, Wozniak.
